Madam Zhu's is a chain restaurant located across 3 cities in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou. They've won the Black Pearl award in 2018 and recieved a Michelin plate for four consecutive years, Their creative and modernizing twist on local cuisine make it worth a try, especially for those looking for a fine-dining experience with Chinese food.
A luxurious marble floor with chandiliers hanging from the ceiling greets you as you enter the restaurannt. Paintings decorate the turqoise walls. A detail to attention I enjoyed was the light that hangs from the ceiling for each table, allowing for a dark immersive atmosphere during dinner without the inconvennience of a dimly lit table.
Cold Chicken with Chili Oil - 68rmb
The "Mouth-watering Chicken" in literal translation from Chinese is a local speciality from Yunnan. The almost translucent skin from simmering in a shaoxing wine solution, with a melt-in-your-mouth chicken meat, meets a numbing and spicy chili oil. Peanuts on top of the chicken also adds a fun crunch!
Egg-covered Tofu - 58rmb.
A slimy(in the best way possible) chicken broth drenches the egg-covered tofu with the mushrooms adding to the delicate texture of the broth. The combination of the umami tofu and egg is perfect.
Prawns with Fried Garlic - 168rmb
Although for a few pieces of prawns the price may seem steep, the succulence of fresh prawns and the aromas of the fried garlic makes the dish worth it. The crispy batter that coats the prawns completely absorbs the flavor of garlic without becoming too oily.
Dumplings - est. 60rmb
Dumplings at Madam Zhu's simply can't be matched. The filling of a combination of meat and shrimp makes the broth extremely flavourful without an excessive richness, as the dought is crispy but thin.
Bok Choi with Clams - 68rmb
Juices and eggs from the clams flows out to cover the bok choi, and the dish serves as a great side to a bowl of rice. Definitely recommend.
