The powerful smell of smoky barbeque hits you as soon as you enter the restaurant. You know its going to be good. I arrived at the restaurant at about 12:30pm and there was a short queue of around 3-4 people, waiting to order their food(which is done at the counter).
As soon as you order, they will take out the cuts that belong on your plate and slice them in front of you. Then, they'll weigh it before finally putting it on your personal tray.
Barbeque Terminology
1. bark - the outer crust of a barbequed meat(usually consists of pepper and other types of spices that go into the rub). Don't be afraid if it looks burnt, its the best part.
2. smoke ring - pinkish/reddish color that develops under the bark
These are the meats that accompany the single-person set for 148rmb - two brisket slices, a rib rack, and a pulled-pork burger. Then, you get to pick two sides. The brisket, with the marbled fat and rendered juices flowing down the bark, is incredible.
The ribs are tender but still provides a chew, and the seasoning is simple. While not the most appealing option on the menu, a pulled-pork burger would be great in a rush. Pickled onions and gherkins are definitely homemade, and the crunch and freshness shows through.
There are 6 options for sides. Some are very traditional(like coleslaw) and others are more unconventional like kale salad with mango. Each side is 18rmb on its own, and comes with the 148rmb set.
I would strongly recommend trying the mushroom with cheese. It's as beefy as the brisket. Soft drinks are 18rmb and beers are 28rmb. There are desert options as well of lemon cake and cinnamon rice pudding.

American/Southern barbeque spots are really rare in Shanghai although international cuisine is Shanghai's specialty. Garlic Barbeque is worth a visit, with a moderate price for a city center restaurant.
